BREAKDOWN
The immersive experience “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0”, curated by Ivan Nefedkin in collaboration with Generative Gallery, showcases the work of Azerbaijani artist Orkhan Mammadov.

Using a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm, Mammadov analyzed over 150,000 carpet compositions and sketches inspired by the rich heritage of Eastern carpet weaving. From this vast dataset, he created a captivating interactive and immersive experience.
His work merges the traditional concept of pattern with the modern capabilities of algorithms that detect structures and regularities in data. The result is a collection of imaginary rugs that have never existed before, while also exploring the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence as a source of artistic inspiration.
The “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” exhibition, returning for its second showcase from May 1st to May 31st, 2023, offers a mesmerizing blend of cultural heritage and cutting-edge technology. This immersive experience, crafted by Azerbaijani artist Orkhan Mammadov, reinterprets the rich history of Eastern carpet weaving through the lens of artificial intelligence and digital art. By employing a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm, Mammadov analyzed over 150,000 carpet compositions and sketches, extracting patterns and motifs that have defined generations of craftsmanship. From this extensive dataset, he generated a captivating interactive show that brings centuries-old traditions into the digital age.
Carpet weaving has long been a cornerstone of artistic expression in Eastern cultures, with each region developing its own unique ornamental language. Many traditional designs share fundamental elements geometric precision, floral arrangements, and intricate calligraphic shapes yet each composition tells a distinct cultural story. Some motifs symbolize prosperity, protection, or spiritual beliefs, while others serve as historical records, encoding the identity of the people who wove them. By applying machine learning, Mammadov has deconstructed and reconstructed these visual languages, creating an entirely new collection of digital rugs that, while never physically woven, maintain a deep connection to their historical roots.
Mammadov’s artistic process relies on the synergy between human creativity and algorithmic intelligence. Using advanced generative design techniques, the machine learning algorithm identifies structural patterns within the vast collection of historical carpet data, allowing the system to generate new variations that retain the essence of traditional weaving. This process not only highlights the aesthetic possibilities of AI-driven art but also raises critical questions about authorship, cultural preservation, and the evolving role of the artist in the digital era.
To bring this intricate vision to life, all visual elements of the exhibition were produced using Notch, a real-time graphics software widely used in digital art installations, concerts, and interactive performances. The generative visuals created in Notch were then seamlessly integrated into the show using Resolume, a powerful media server that enabled dynamic playback, synchronization, and live control of the visual content. This combination of software tools allowed for a highly responsive and fluid visual experience, ensuring that the digital tapestry of carpets came to life with stunning depth and movement.
Beyond its visual spectacle, “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” incorporates interactive elements that allow visitors to engage directly with the digital artworks. In the final phase of the experience, a Kinect sensor was used to track the movement and gestures of the audience, enabling real-time interaction with the projected visuals. As visitors moved through the space, their presence influenced the evolution of the generative carpet designs, making each encounter with the exhibition unique. This interactive component not only deepened the connection between the viewer and the artwork but also highlighted the fluid and evolving nature of digital art.
As we transition into the digital age and embrace new frontiers such as the metaverse, it becomes increasingly crucial to preserve and reinterpret our cultural heritage. “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” demonstrates how ancient traditions can be seamlessly woven into contemporary digital landscapes, ensuring that historical artistry remains relevant in an era dominated by technology. By blending real-time graphics and interactive installations, Mammadov’s work serves as both a tribute to the past and a vision for the future of artistic expression.
Whether you are passionate about textile history, fascinated by the fusion of art and artificial intelligence, or simply curious about the interplay between tradition and technology, “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” offers an experience unlike any other. This exhibition is not just a visual spectacle it is a thought-provoking journey that invites visitors to reconsider the boundaries of art, culture, and digital innovation. Step into a world where ancient motifs breathe new life through the power of machine learning and immersive technology, and witness firsthand the future of generative design.
